Partnering to support the Net Zero journey

For the last eight years, one of Briar’s experienced energy engineers has been invited to sit on Royal Brompton and Harefield Clinical Group’s Sustainable Development Management Group (SDMG), providing energy and environmental consultancy and attending quarterly meetings.

Part of this role involves collating and reporting on the Clinical Group’s energy and other wider sustainability issues to the Greener NHS National programme, supporting the hospital’s estate team to identify, implement and verify carbon reduction projects, collate and report on the Trust’s energy data, alongside wider sustainability issues to the Greener NHS National programme, and providing the Environmental Matters section of the Clinical Group’s Annual Report.

“Briar has supported our hospitals since 2006, assisting with the development of our Green Plan and providing a range of independent technical advice and support, including carbon reporting, grant applications, legislative compliance, and low carbon project design and implementation. Briar has become our trusted partner for the identification of energy and carbon reduction opportunities, and we look forward to working with them throughout our Net Zero journey.”

Developing the Green Plan

Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals are actively working towards the NHS’s ambitious Net Zero targets and, as its trusted partner for the identification of energy and carbon reduction opportunities, Briar was appointed to develop the Green Plan for the Trust. It was prepared over a period of 18 months and follows on from two iterations of a Carbon Management Plan developed by Briar in 2008 and 2013.

The Green Plan is much more holistic in scope and not only covers emissions from buildings (fossil fuels, electricity), and transport, but it begins to capture other environmental impacts, including waste, procurement, medical gases, patient and staff travel and biodiversity. The Plan also includes the Clinical Group’s commitment to the Greener NHS programme targets, with KPIs to demonstrate progress.

Carbon reduction initiatives

+++++++

We have worked with the hospitals since 2006, providing a range of support over that period, including annual Display Energy Certificates, energy audits and carbon reduction initiatives.

Work on the building management system and variable speed drives for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system delivered an annual emission saving of 80 tCO2e, representing an annual cost saving of circa £20,000, while protecting the NHS budget due to being covered by Salix funding we obtained.

Meanwhile, LED lighting upgrades covered by £175,000 from the NHS Energy Efficiency Fund, delivered an annual emission saving of 49 tCO2e, representing an annual cost saving of circa
£18,000.

We have developed an initial Heat Decarbonisation strategy to support the Clinical Group’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) application to identify the challenge and capital expense required to substantially reduce the site’s CO2e emissions. We have also presented to its Green Group regarding good housekeeping and staff awareness issues relating to energy saving behaviours.
