The Public Sector has a key role in demonstrating a structured approach to carbon management to improve efficiency, save money, and to help deliver the Government’s ambitious carbon reduction targets. This is a challenge for many public sector bodies due to financial pressures such as austerity measures, volatile energy prices, and the burden of increasing carbon taxes.

Briar have supported the public sector for over 25 years in the identification and implementation of projects that have significantly reduced long-term energy consumption, costs and CO2 emissions. Our work with local authorities, within education, the NHS, and throughout the wider public sector has resulted in our appointment on many national carbon reduction projects and schemes. This includes the Carbon Trust Collaborative Low Carbon Schools Service (working with 42 LA’s and their schools), the management of the Higher Education Carbon Management Programme, and in securing a broad range of funding for public sector clients, including Salix and HEFCE Revolving Green Funds that have delivered millions of pounds in savings.

There is no doubt that achieving savings can be challenging, especially when considering the range and depth of spending cuts across the public sector. However, through targeted support, the identification of robust invest-to-save projects, and the sourcing of external energy efficiency grants (such as Salix), substantial savings can be made at very little cost.
