Your roadmap to net zero
Your roadmap to net zero
Organisations can no longer ignore their responsibility to act on what could possibly be the biggest threat humanity has ever faced. As a minimum it is undoubtedly the single biggest challenge facing our generation. Minimising the global increases in temperature caused by anthropogenic emissions and tackling climate change is a truly global challenge, but everyone has a role to play and can make a difference, no matter how small or large.
If it hasn’t already, your journey to net zero can start today and Zenergi can support your organisation, every step of the way. We pride ourselves on delivering reliable and practical advice, which is then underpinned by credible solutions with clearly identifiable benefits. Put simply, not only does this mean we can help you get started by creating a baseline and setting a net zero target, but we can also work with you to define and achieve the roadmap that meets your objectives.
Our market-leading solution helps organisations to not only define their carbon footprint, but also provides a glidepath to net zero with the relevant expertise and tools, every step of the way. The three-stage Zen Zero framework – Measure, Prepare, and Deliver – is a proven approach that will deliver sustained benefits across your organisation, from increased profit through strategic energy efficiency programmes, while reducing the risk from rising energy and carbon prices, to assisting the UK nationally to provide security of energy supplies and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
“There is no company whose business model won’t be profoundly affected by the transition to a net zero economy. As the transition accelerates, companies with a well-articulated long-term strategy, and a clear plan to address the transition to net zero, will distinguish themselves with their stakeholders – with customers, policymakers, employees, and shareholders – by inspiring confidence that they can navigate this global transformation.”
Larry Fink, CEO & Chairman of BlackRock, Annual letter to CEOs
In 2019, the UK Government amended the Climate Change Act, committing the UK to achieving net zero by 2050. But more progress is needed in the UK and globally.
This was highlighted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report from August 2021, in which its research further demonstrates the astonishing rate at which climate change is taking place. However, it also made clear that urgent action to radically reduce carbon emissions can avert the climate emergency.
“Any further delay in concerted global action will miss a brief and rapidly closing window to secure a liveable future.”
Inger Anderson, the head of the UN Environment Programme
“Stabilizing the climate will require strong, rapid, and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and reaching net zero CO2 emissions.”
IPCC Report, August 2021

Detailed site audits
Establish ambition level
Agree net zero target
Launch net zero plan
Our Zen Zero partnership typically begins with a customer workshop to familiarise your key stakeholders with our team and net zero. Another key deliverable is to build an initial understanding of your organisation’s objectives, as this is critical to the success of what will follow, ensuring that Zenergi fully understand your business drivers and to begin shaping an overall vision for the programme.
Key stakeholders will be involved in the workshop, where Zenergi will seek to understand any existing management systems, current compliance levels and any targets that may already be in place across the organisation.
The final key deliverable in this stage is to commence the data capture process, allowing Zenergi to understand your carbon footprint in detail and to begin the process of building a credible baseline, utilising the Green House Gas Protocol to categorise any relevant emissions against the internationally recognised standard.
During the Prepare phase of the programme, Zenergi will continue with the data collection process, conducting further quality checks on the data provided and working with your teams to either close gaps in the data, by complementing the existing data sets with site audits, or by requesting information from your supply chain, for example. The wealth of data gathered will allow our specialists to identify detailed carbon reduction options. Each one will form part of a net zero glidepath and will contain the necessary detail to establish timeframes, costs, and return on investment.
At this stage, a further workshop will be organised to play back all of Zenergi’s analysis. This will be our opportunity to share our detailed insights and recommendations, all of which will be complemented with industry benchmarking that we’ve prepared to illustrate the ‘art of the possible’ and where you sit relative to your peers. The ultimate aim of this workshop is to identify your organisation’s level of ambition and to define a date for your net zero strategy.
It’s finally time to put all of the hard work into action, starting with the launch and stakeholder engagement plan once the net zero strategy has received the necessary approval – and Zenergi’s multidisciplinary team are here to support every step of the way. We fully appreciate that every organisation is unique, and each has its own footprint and different constraints and opportunities. The level of internal capacity, budget, and technical knowledge available will often determine how much support customers require.
Whatever your requirements – large or small – Zenergi can support your organisation. Whether it’s procuring renewable energy contracts, supporting your transition to electric vehicles, securing funding, installing renewable technology across your estate, or simply providing reporting and governance, our multidisciplinary award-winning teams can help. Energy is a fast-evolving industry, so our programme ensures that your net zero roadmap continuously keeps pace by assessing emerging technologies, changes in regulation and trends in the sector to ensure that you meet your energy, carbon and cost saving objectives in the most innovative way.
Zenergi is an energy and environmental consultancy aiming to make a positive difference in the world of energy, and to do so in a manner that is simple, sustainable and achievable.
Zenergi Group is also proud to have launched our own social value strategy, ‘Powering a Sustainable Future’. This ambitious plan confirms our numerous commitments to helping reduce our impact on the planet. For this reason we are proud to have committed to be net zero for Scope 1 and 2 by 2025. This means we can share experiences from our own personal journey, in addition to bringing the knowledge we’ve built by helping organisations of all shapes and sizes. Making a difference to over 4,000 organisations across the United Kingdom, Zenergi is built on the belief that there is a better, brighter way forward for the energy industry.
Our long-term ambition for the future of energy is to help customers reach their vision of energy freedom and to invest in building a future that supports those organisations through the transition to net zero and tackling the largest challenge of our generation head on – responding to a changing climate.
Our technical division, Briar, employs highly experienced and qualified energy engineers who are trusted to deliver expert advice and services to support customers in achieving their carbon reduction objectives and in meeting their compliance obligations. Briar has been at the forefront of identifying and implementing carbon reduction measures for over 30 years. With most organisations now looking to reduce carbon emissions and make sustainability a core part of their strategy, Briar is focused on partnering with customers to deliver fast-track practical savings that engender confidence for investment to realise profound long-term savings.
ESOS Phase 1: We identified £26 million in energy savings for customers. Of that, £13 million had a payback within one year.
ESOS Phase 2: We delivered more than 170 ESOS Phase 2 programmes, covering in excess of 400 site surveys. This identified potential savings of £47 million, 481GWh and 126,000 tCO2e. Of this, £20 million, 298GWh and 70,000 tCO2e could be saved on a no-cost or low-cost basis with a return on investment of less than one year.
We have expertise in securing the benefits of UK Government schemes that offer reductions in taxes, levies or indirect costs of energy. In the last year, our management of these schemes saved our clients more than £2.7 million in those indirect costs.
A global medical technology company engaged us to help meet its 2030 objective of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 46% against a baseline of 2019.
Rather than simply switching from natural gas to 100% biogas at a higher cost, we identified opportunities for process changes that would reduce Scope 1 CO2 emissions by 67% while at the same time reducing costs by £34,000 for an investment of £28,000.
Although the purchase of renewable electricity would reduce the market-based Scope 2 CO2 emissions to zero, we recommended process improvements to reduce electricity consumption, thereby reducing annual grid demand by 1,200,000 kWh.
Implementation of the recommended measures will save the company £148,000 per annum (at 2021 prices).
A British motorsport and advanced engineering group recognised its environmental responsibilities and had made a voluntary commitment to become net zero, but hadn’t defined a timescale in which to achieve it. The organisation had already secured a 100% renewable electricity contract that had removed 280 tCO2e from its baseline CO2 footprint.
We evaluated the Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to ascertain why and where energy is consumed to identify efficiency improvements.
The largest Scope 2 emissions are from equipment with long operation times. Since the supply contract is for 100% renewable electricity, at a marketbased level the emissions are 0 tCO2e. Although currently discounted from the CO2 footprint, our recommendations would deliver more than £35,000 in annual savings for an investment of just over £200,000, providing a payback period of just over five years.
A leading equine feed manufacturer engaged us to help achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its sites by 2035. It had already moved to procuring 100% renewable electricity that had reduced its total CO2 emissions by 34% and 113.4 tCO2e.
We established the total emissions from primary activities, and identified measures that had already been taken and others that may yet be taken to achieve the objective.
Our recommendations for reducing CO2 emissions included measures and technology to reduce waste and improve energy efficiency; generation of electricity on site; recovering ‘waste’ heat energy; reducing CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and road vehicles; and carbon offsetting.
Our detailed roadmap to achieving the target, included CO2 and cost savings; and payback periods.
